The Christmas Story begins with a foreword by Elizabeth Yates, who compiled the scripture passages that make up the rest of the book. She curates this story of the promised Messiah, beginning with Isaiah and the minor prophets, through Matthew’s and Luke’s gospels, and finishing with the promised eternal reign in Revelation.

The text is paired with the breathtakingly detailed woodcut illustrations of Nora S. Unwin.

Scripture passages are taken from the American Standard Version of the Bible, published in 1901. Yates’ original selections were from the King James Version, but since the KJV is not public domain worldwide, we have chosen the ASV for its similar flavor.
